This pastor is not a Christian by any stretch of imagination. I will think of him as a closeted self hating gay man.

I agree with the reporters. He is a coward and a charlatan, since he could not show his face to defend his pious religious indoctrination. But I guess, by his own narrative; and of his supporters, it will be a sin – to pray to a graven image as Catholicism allows, since it’s in the Bible not to practice idolatry.
